How an Edmonton startup is helping homes in Somalia that don’t have formal addresses. Here’
It’s just one example of the exorbitant fees Somali-Canadians pay to send urgently needed packages and money depended on by loved ones in a country recovering from decades of civil war. One reason why the cost is so high is that many houses lack formal addresses, Ibrahim said, which is also a massive barrier to governance, security and economic growth. The dilemma inspired Ibrahim to apply his know-how as a professional engineer and community advocate in collaboration with other Somali-Canadians to develop a system that assigns properties in Somalia with a standardized, unique and verifiable address. Now, three years later, Karaar Digital Address (KDA),…
Nairobi: Kenya has reported a fall in overall terrorism and crime cases across the country in the recent past, thanks to collaboration between local and international security agencies. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, also acting Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, said 27 terrorist attacks have been thwarted between January 2022 and November 2024 across Kenya. “During this period several terrorists have been neutralized. The government has also pushed for 11 successful convictions. Our success came through collaboration with international agencies,” Mudavadi told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. “Noteworthy, our success also came through collaborations with…

By:Melissa Chemam The self-governing region within Somalia – which has never been recognised by the latter’s authorities – appears to be closer to being recognised than ever before. Speaking at his inauguration in Hargeisa on 12 December, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi said he would give “special importance to foreign policy” and pursue recognition for Somaliland from the international community based on a “valid legal argument”. “My new government’s first job is to renew its relations with the rest of the world in order for us to be able to create a new Somaliland that will help the security of the entire region,…
Somalia took the ambitious step of banning single-use plastic bags this year, but in a country with many economic challenges, it has proved hard to implement. It follows similar plastic bans in other east African countries including Kenya and Tanzania. But brightly-coloured polythene still dominates in the markets and shops of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu. Long bedevilled by conflict, Somalia passed its law in February, but did not implement it until October. Despite a few arrests, there is little sign it is having an impact. “We are using these bags because they are cheap and people can afford them,” grocer Abdikarim…
Lorem imsum 200 Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
